Nowadays, various brands are launching various electric vehicles.

Although crossover SUVs are the mainstream, sports car-type electric vehicles are also launched, and Japan also launches the lightweight electric vehicle Nissan "Sakura". Even though they are both called electric vehicles, they have different features such as motor output, cruising range, body size, and price.

Many electric vehicles have a common main advantage: "the interior is quiet and you can enjoy a comfortable driving experience." This is also widely publicized as an advantage of electric vehicles.

Until now, most vehicles are equipped with engines. The engine is a device that is assembled, operated, and generates kinetic energy by various parts, but it is also one of the sources of noise. Even when the vehicle is stationary, the engine will continue to idle and will not be completely silent unless the vehicle stops idling and stalls.

As the vehicle speed increases, the noise will become louder with the speed, and there will also be driving sounds such as the gearbox. When driving an old car on the highway, you have to turn up the volume to have a conversation.

On the other hand, the number of parts in the powertrain of an electric vehicle is extremely small compared to that of an engine vehicle. Because there are fewer moving parts, the sound when driving will be quieter than that of an engine car.

In addition, electric vehicles do not require a gearbox in principle, so the noise generated from the power system is only the sound of motor driving. It is nearly silent compared to the sound of the engine, so most electric vehicles are promoted as being low-noise.

Quietness in a car doesn’t depend on whether there’s an engine or not


If a modern car is not a sports car and exceeds a certain price range, the engine sound transmitted into the car will not be very loud.

As the quietness of engines has evolved, and vehicles are manufactured in such a way that sound is difficult to penetrate into the interior of the vehicle, even if it is not an electric vehicle, you will generally not feel noisy from the engine during daily driving. Old cars can also achieve the same quietness as modern cars by reducing the vibration and echo of the iron plates and performing work such as filling gaps.

But even if the engine sound becomes quieter, you can still hear the hum while driving on the highway. This sound is the tire noise caused by the friction between the tires and the road, not the engine sound. The main noise of modern vehicles also comes from this.

Any vehicle equipped with tires will produce tire noise. Therefore, in addition to reducing engine sound, it will also prevent tire noise from being transmitted into the car, thereby creating a comfortable riding experience.

Rather than saying "electric cars are quiet", it's better to say "because they are electric cars, they are made quiet."


Tire noise has nothing to do with engine cars or electric cars. In fact, the heavier the vehicle, the more often electric vehicles use large-size tires, and the greater the tire noise will be. The absence of engine sound in electric vehicles will make the tire noise more prominent.

In fact, electric cars are quieter than engine cars. This is because electric cars have already taken this into account when they are manufactured to pursue higher quietness. Although the expensive battery is the main reason for the high price of the car, it is heavier than an engine car and has extremely high requirements for quietness. The vehicle is manufactured in a manner similar to that of a high-end car, which is also one of the reasons for the high price of electric cars.

Almost all of the electric cars available in Japan today are higher-end than cars of the same class, but in the future, electric cars may be launched that are equivalent to or even cheaper than engine-powered cars.

To make electric vehicles cheap, they need to do the same as ultra-cheap light vehicles and small cars with only the minimum tire noise and sound insulation works. People who have the subjective impression that "electric cars are quiet" about today's high-end electric cars may feel that electric cars are noisier than they imagined when they switch to cheaper electric cars in the future.
