●Mazda announced the discontinuation of production of “CX-8” on its official website
● Will "CX-80" become the successor model of "CX-8"?... Will it be released at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show?
Mazda announced on its official website that the three-row seat flagship crossover SUV "CX-8" will be discontinued in December 2023, bringing an end to the model.
"CX-8" went on sale on December 14, 2017. The exterior design will be updated on November 2, 2022, and the "Grand Journey" model will be added. Before the release, there were rumors that the "Grand Journey" might become the last special car. Since then, the future direction of CX-8 has attracted much attention.
Currently in Mazda's domestic product lineup in Japan, the "CX-8" is the only crossover SUV equipped with three rows of seats. The "CX-8" sold as a family car instead of an MPV will disappear from the product lineup in the future, and the crossover SUV "CX-80" with three rows of seats will be launched as a successor.
"CX-80" is a model mentioned in Mazda's "Crossover SUV product group expansion plan after 2022" released in October and July 2021. The car uses a new platform "Large architecture" introduced from the CX-60, with an in-line engine arranged longitudinally and rear-wheel drive.
The wide-body three-row seat "CX-90" using the "Large architecture" platform has been launched in the North American market, and it is speculated that the "CX-80" will be its narrow version.
"CX-8" uses a transversely configured engine and is equipped with a front-wheel drive platform. As mentioned above, "CX-80" adopts a new chassis platform, so the driving feel and ride comfort of "CX-8" and "CX-80" may be greatly different. Because many people have reported that the "CX-60" has a poor ride quality, whether it can become an alternative to the "CX-8" will have an impact on sales.
In addition, when Mazda released its "Crossover SUV product group expansion plan after 2022," it announced that it would introduce new Crossover SUV models including the CX-80 within the next two years. Judging from the discontinuation of production of the "CX-8" in December, the "CX-80" has a chance to debut earlier, and it may be released at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show, which will be held from October 26, 2023.
