[百問]8 questions about compulsory brake modification (medium)beginners understand it at once

Question 4. Can you tell whether the brake is good or bad from the color of the disc?

Many people may not know that from the color of the disc surface, you can know whether it matches the brake pad properly. If the color on the disc shows a bright silver color, it means that the braking performance is in a state of full play, but if it is The black and dim surface means that the grade of the brake pads is not enough. It is best to change to a set of brake pads with a stronger friction coefficient to fully exert the effectiveness of the braking system.

The principle lies in the friction effect between the disc and the brake pads. The reason why the disc appears black is mainly caused by the overheating of the disc. It usually occurs on the original pad. The friction coefficient of these pads is often It is not high and cannot wear the surface of the disc. The braking force can only be obtained by the clamping force of the brake caliper. Also, because of the poor friction effect, the time to step on the brake pedal will be prolonged, and the temperature of the disc and the incoming film will continue. In the case of increasing, the surface of the disc will be overheated. After the temperature is cooled down, the blackish cast iron material after annealing will naturally appear on the surface of the disc.

On the contrary, a good brake pad can not only enhance the braking effect, shorten the stepping time of the brake pedal, and reduce the overheating of the disc, even if the disc surface is blackish, as long as the pedal is lightly stepped on the road a few times, the brake skin can be used. The surface of the disc is "grinded" to make it bright, while maintaining a "sparkling and moving" appearance. Therefore, under a good match between the film and the disc, the surface of the disc should be in a shiny state.

Question 5. Should I change the metal tubing?

The author’s suggestion is that if the budget is insufficient, you can actually do not need to replace the metal hose, because the effect of improving the braking efficiency is not very large, unless you are looking for a braking force that responds quickly.

The brake hose is basically fixed on the body part, and no special upgrade is required. Only the part where the body is connected to the four-wheel sub-cylinder is required to use rubber-made high-pressure-resistant soft because the suspension system needs to operate up and down. The pressure is transmitted by the tube, but the rubber products will swell under extremely high pressure (about 2000~5000psi), which will make the brake foot feel not solid and the power transmission will have a second difference, which is not conducive to the reaction speed of the brake system, so Teflon The metal hose covered with metal mesh can withstand high pressure without swelling and deformation. This is an upgrade of the brake hose.

Many multi-piston caliper systems will change the brake hoses from the original rubber material to the metal-clad material. Why? The answer is to get a faster braking response.
The brake hose is basically fixed on the body part, and no special upgrade is required. Only the part where the body is connected to the four-wheel sub-cylinder is required to use rubber-made high-pressure-resistant soft because the suspension system needs to operate up and down. Pipes are used to transmit pressure, and the replacement metal tubing is in this part.

However, since the metal tubing has poorer toughness and flexibility than the original rubber tubing, you must pay attention to whether the technician maintains the natural compliance of the entire metal tubing during installation, that is, do not allow the surface of the metal tubing to rotate tightly. The stretched state will cause its surface to lose its elasticity and feel hard to the touch. Once the device is next to the shock absorber that is constantly moving up and down, it is easy to cause the Teflon layer on the tubing to rupture and leak oil, and the consequences are equally disastrous! In addition, the fixing method is best handled with a special bracket, so as to avoid friction and damage and oil leakage.

This rubber brake hose is an original assembly part of the BMW F90 M5. Rubber hoses are still used in such tight cars. Therefore, if the budget is insufficient, there is no need to over-pursuit the upgrade of the metal brake hoses.

Question 6. What is a floating disc?

Usually professional multi-piston caliper sets, in order to effectively reduce weight and heat insulation, usually use a two-piece product with the center plate made of aluminum alloy and then combined with the outer plate (the screws are also very particular about not being thermally deformed). Not every two-piece disc is a floating disc.

The combination of the brake center disc and the outer disc in the picture is an orthodox floating disc.

The real floating disc refers to the connection between the center disc and the outer disc. It is composed of spring washers + special screws. The outer disc and the center disc are not really in contact with each other. This is used for the jitter-prone Large discs, such as discs with a diameter of 380mm or more, need to use a floating design, and the vents of this kind of discs will also have an oblique design. Be sure to pay attention to the directionality of the left and right when changing the installation. .

Not every type of dual-disc disc is a floating disc. The design shown in the figure is just a general two-disc disc.

In addition, another major requirement of the disc is to have sufficient heat dissipation and constant temperature ability. A ventilated disc with a large outer diameter and thick has a great advantage. At the same time, its steel is also very important, and it needs to be able to withstand temperature without annealing. The damage to the metal key is because the material of the brake disc is as important as the brake pad. If the temperature resistance is too low, the high temperature generated during intense driving will cause the disc to "anneal" and make the metal The bond is damaged by thermal shock. If it is small, it will easily make the disc jitter and harden, and the braking force will decline. If it is serious, it will cause the disc to crack, and the safety of use is worrying. If there are small cracks on the disc or a darkening phenomenon in a certain circle, it means that there is a burnt situation, which will become a disadvantage of heat accumulation. At this time, please prepare for replacement as soon as possible.

Some disc vents also have oblique openings, and the internal ribs will also appear tornado. When changing, you must pay attention to the directionality of the left and right. The general principle is that the airflow in the disc diffuses from the center to the outside.
