The car market is in shambles. In March 2022, according to Jato, only 1,1200,000 new cars were sold in Europe – that is 19 percent less than a year earlier. However, the decline in sales cannot stop the advance of electric cars and plug-in hybrids. Together they are responsible for 22 percent of sales.
The Tesla Model 3 is the big winner. With 23,013 units, it is twice the number one: it is the best-selling new car overall, and the most popular electric car. The Tesla Model Y is also extremely popular: 18,968 units. It is in second place in the EV top 10. The difference with the number 3 is so great that it spoils the fun for other brands.
Places 2 to 10 are dominated by relatively affordable EVs. The Fiat 500e, Peugeot 208, Renault Zoe and the Dacia Spring are all doing well. Funny to see that the BMW i3 still sells so well.
Where are 'big boys' like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 and the Polestar 2? These fall just outside the top 10, because 3243, 2942 and 3003 units were sold respectively.
