427 kilometers is the official range of the BYD Dolphin (2023) in Comfort version. But what is the real reach? So how far do you get when driving down the highway at 100 km/h? We test that!
When choosing a BYD Dolphin, you should look carefully at which battery you get. The two cheaper versions (Active and Boost) have a battery pack of 44.9 kWh. The larger battery of 60.4 kWh is reserved for the Comfort and the Design. We drive the Comfort version for 35,490 euros.
As for the weather conditions on test day, the Dolphin is lucky. At this time of year, dry weather and an outside temperature of 13 degrees are the best you can hope for. We drive our standard test lap of 100 kilometers, on the A73 from Nijmegen to Venlo and back.

At 100 km/h, the BYD Dolphin has an average power consumption of 18,0 kWh/100 km. If you drive a full battery with a usable capacity of 60.4 kWh completely empty, you will arrive 335 kilometer ver.
Normally we show you photos from the trip computer, but there was no way we could reset them. Fortunately, the Dolphin maps the power consumption of the last 50 kilometers, the precise distance of our return trip. We took the average of both trips (17.8 and 18.2 kWh/100 km). You can see the graphs in the photos below.
To put the consumption of the BYD Dolphin in proportion: the MG4 Electric achieved a comparable score of 17.6 kWh/100 km in February. And the car with which the Dolphin shares its platform – the Atto 3 WORLD – consumed 17.5 kWh/100 km, exactly one year ago.

This time we didn't have time to do a range test at 130 km/h. But if the power consumption of the Dolphin is again similar to that of the Atto 3, then it is around 26 kWh/100 km and you get about 230 kilometers from a full battery. But this is just guesswork, we have not tested it.
If you drive a BYD Dolphin on the highway during the day, you will start thinking about a charging break after 300 kilometers. Then you charge to 80 percent in 40 minutes and then you have 268 kilometers in your pocket. Excellent numbers for a car in this price range.
Initially we thought the measured power consumption of 18.0 kWh/100 km was a fairly high number. But then you look at the consumption figures of the MG4 Electric and the BYD Atto 3 and you see that you cannot avoid this in the winter. It is better to find out now than after you have bought the car.
