The future Volkswagen ID.2 is the starting signal of a new interior design from Volkswagen. Say goodbye to controversial and unpopular touch buttons, and hello to physical buttons.
Last March we had a little jump of joy when we saw the interior of the concept model. Finally, Volkswagen's so often cursed touch buttons were gone and we actually saw a row of physical buttons for the temperature and even a large rotary knob on the center tunnel to operate the central screen.
According to Darius Watola - responsible for the interior design at Volkswagen - the design is an example for all future Volkswagens. Touch buttons have therefore been permanently banned. The designer talks to the British AutoCar indicates that the choice for physical buttons was made due to 'recent customer feedback'.

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer also spoke out earlier about the touch buttons. The CEO admitted that they "caused a lot of damage to their image" and also unnecessarily frustrated many customers. In 2019, Volkswagen introduced the touch buttons on the eighth generation of the Volkswagen Golfafter which these were applied to several other models, such as the Volkswagen ID.3 and the Volkswagen ID.4.

The touch buttons come in two forms: as sliders on the center console for temperature and volume, and as touch-sensitive touch buttons for, among other things, the adaptive cruise control on the steering wheel. And just like with the touch buttons of an induction hob, your fingers are sometimes not recognized or you unconsciously press the wrong button. So not a nice way to work.
One of the other major criticisms of Volkswagen interiors in recent years is the extensive use of hard plastic. Volkswagen also wants to put an end to this, as well as the use of leather and chrome. In the ID.2all, Volkswagen often uses a mix of fabric and Alcantara, which makes almost every surface feel softer.
According to Watola, Vokswagen wants to follow this interior concept as much as possible for the production model of the Volkswagen ID.2. Although this seems an almost impossible task with the target price of 25,000 euros in mind.
