DS ventures into a hornet's nest with the DS 4. He does not focus on good middle-class cars such as the Ford Focus, the Renault Mégane or the Volkswagen Golf, but seeks it higher. The Audi A3 Sportback, BMW 1-series and Mercedes A-class can wet their chest, according to DS.
DS was founded to bring French chic back to the automotive world. The DS 4 pulls out all its seduction skills. He does so - in the brand's house style - with a hexagonal grille, piercing headlights, sharp folds and pinched taillights. A busy design that you either find beautiful or too much of a good thing.
The interior designers have done their very best on the elongated dashboard, which with its bending corners in the distance is somewhat reminiscent of that of the Saab 900. You can tell in the details: every button you touch feels like it was made for eternity. Depending on the version, the French used nappa leather, wood or Alcantara.
DS also tries to satisfy SUV enthusiasts with the DS 4 Cross. It has black bumpers and roof rails, so it looks more like an SUV than the other models. But that's optical illusion. The Cross is exactly the same length and height as the other DS 4 models.
Incidentally, the DS 4 is more German than you think: it is built at Opel in Rüsselsheim. The DS 4 is on the same platform as the Opel Astra and the Peugeot 308.
First some specs: the DS 4 E-Tense is a plug-in hybrid with 225 hp. A 1.6 petrol engine with 180 hp and an electric motor with 110 hp together provide a power of 225 hp. Purely on the electric motor, you get 55 kilometers away. Those who would like to, can try to get the consumption of 1.3 l/100 km specified by DS (1 to 76.9).
The DS 4 E-Tense is quite fast: it sprints to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds and has a top speed of 233 km/h (electric: 135 km/h). But the DS 4 does not want to be a speed demon. On the comfortable leather seats with massage function and looking out over the beautiful dashboard, you will not be tempted to interpret every turn as the Tarzan bend on the Zandvoort circuit. It is precisely the comfort with which he impresses: at 130 km/h you hear almost no engine noises. The chassis with adaptive dampers (unfortunately not standard on most versions) uses a camera, which 'reads' the road ahead of the car. The tuning is automatically adjusted accordingly.
The gentle tuning will make any Francophile cheer in most situations. Small setback: if the asphalt is of poor quality, the chassis is somewhat confused and gives the unevenness too emphatically. There, the DS from 2021 could have learned something from the primal Citroen DS from 1955, the fabulous car that the brand likes to focus on.
We'll start with a tip: leave the big 20-inch wheels (optional on the most expensive versions) as they are. They look a bit tougher, but detract from the comfort.
Furthermore, the operation is unnecessarily complicated. In fact, you always have to perform one action too many: the air conditioning cannot be raised or lowered with a simple rotary or push button. To operate the seat heating and ventilation, you have to go even deeper into the menu structure.
Last downside: especially the legroom in the back is not about.
The DS 4 will be at the dealer in the autumn of 2021. The price of the DS 4 is at least 35,450 euros, for the DS 4 Puretech 130 with three-cylinder turbo engine. In the future (probably not until 2024) there will also be a fully electric DS 4. All versions of the DS 4 have an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard.
DS is starting to pick up steam. If one model de gamechanger can be, then it is the DS 4. Although it is questionable whether buyers will really see the DS 4 as the reasonable alternative to the Big Three from Germany. DS is ambitious in every way, including with its high prices…
