The Ford Explorer is coming later than expected. To make the electric SUV comply with the latest safety regulations, Ford has postponed its introduction until summer 2024.
In June, Ford opened its new electric car production line in Cologne. The Ford Explorer is the first model that will roll off the line there. But Ford doesn't seem to be in a hurry, as the electric SUV will be available until mid-2024.
We think: takes a long time. By that time, more than a year has elapsed unveiling of the Ford Explorer and delivering the first cars to customers.
Ford says the delay is necessary for the Explorer to meet the latest safety regulations. It calls UN Regulations 100.3 by name, a 95-page document that does not contain the word 'car' – it speaks of 'wheeled vehicles'. You know you mean business when you use language like that.
The focus here is on the safety of the (electric) powertrain and the new tests associated with it. Ford says safety and quality are of paramount importance and so seizes its opportunity to make the Explorer comply with the latest safety regulations. All new wheeled vehicles to be homologated must soon comply with this.

So you still have some time to save. Ford mentions a starting price of less than 45,000 euros. That leaves the door ajar for EV subsidies. It has to be, because the Explorer shares a lot of technology with the Volkswagen ID.4 and the basic version of it is already eligible for such a financial boost.
