The Mazda MX-5 has received a facelift for the Japanese market. The technology has also been addressed. You can count on this Mazda MX-5 facelift also coming to Europe. This is how Mazda has managed to make the MX-5 even more fun.
To start with the technology: the 1.5-liter four-cylinder base engine with 131 hp now produces 136 hp. As before, these are sent to the rear wheels. The second engine version of 2.0 liters with 184 hp has remained unchanged. Mazda does say that it has tightened the throttle response. A new asymmetrical limited-slip differential for the manual versions should ensure that they can corner even better/more stable.
Anyone who wants to push the limits on the track can now do so with a special track mode of the electronic stability program (ESP). Then the system only intervenes when something really threatens to go wrong. This track mode is also only available on versions with a manual six-speed gearbox.
Mazda will continue to build the MX-5 with an automatic transmission, but it will probably not come to the Netherlands - just like now. The MX-5 RF with a steel folding roof is available in our country with a six-speed automatic transmission. All changes to the facelift also apply to the retractable fastback.
You can recognize the 2024 facelift of the Mazda MX-5 by something that is no longer there, namely the LED strips in the front bumper. We never liked it, so you won't hear us complaining. The daytime running lights will now be included in the new LED headlights.
What is new is that the MX-5 will be available with adaptive cruise control with an emergency braking function. Also new: the design of the alloy wheels, the slightly changed rear lights and the body color aero gray metallic which you can now find on the Mazda 2 can get.
The interior of the Mazda has also been adjusted, albeit a little. This is mainly about the larger multimedia screen. That is now 7 inches and growing to 8.8 inches. The menu structure must be clearer and the software must be faster.

The Mazda MX-5 facelift will be available in Japan from early 2024. Hopefully the roadster will come to our country before the summer. In Japan, the car has become about 10 percent more expensive. This means that the updated Mazda MX-5 breaks the magical limit of 40 grand here. The Japanese convertible is currently available from 39,690 euros.

Now that the world seems to have been taken over by SUVs and crossovers, you don't have to fear that Mazda will say goodbye to the MX-5. On the contrary. At the upcoming Japan Mobility Show at the end of October, the Mazda stand will focus on the MX-5. Mazda shows here examples of the first generation (the one with the folding headlights) but also unveils a concept model that may hint at the fifth generation MX-5 (see the photo above).
