Oh well, it's our mistake ... Hollow marketing terms should not be taken literally. The Audi Grandsphere is simply an electric top limousine with an impressive range and the promise of autonomy. Why promise? Because Audi probably cannot yet live up to its claims of autonomous driving on Level 4. A Level 4 car is in principle fully self-driving, but could sometimes ask for help from the driver in difficult situations (eg bad weather). Modern cars don't get past Level 2.
The Audi Grandsphere will be presented next week at the IAA in Munich. It is 5.35 meters long and offers, according to Audi, the luxury of a private jet. By this, the brand means that the cabin of the Grandsphere can be transformed when the car is on the road autonomously. Then the pedals, steering wheel and displays disappear from view and the occupants have plenty of space to work or relax. The functions of the infotainment system can be operated with hand gestures, voice commands, written text or even eye movements, Audi writes.
To facilitate entry, the Audi Grandsphere has 'suicide doors': doors that open in opposite directions. The limousine does not have a b-pillar that gets in the way. According to Audi, the Grandsphere recognizes its occupants by their walking style. When you approach the car, the computer knows who you are, opens the doors and already sets your preferences, such as the position of the seats and the settings of the air conditioning or heating.
The Audi Grandsphere is on the PPE (Premium Platform Electric) platform and is 5.35 meters long, 2.00 meters wide and 1.39 meters high. Its wheelbase of 3.19 meters is longer than that of an Audi A8 L. The battery pack of the electric limousine is located low under the passenger compartment. The Grandsphere has two electric motors (one at the front and one at the rear) with a combined output of 722 hp and 960 Nm of torque. With its 120 kWh battery, it can travel about 750 kilometers. Audi has equipped the Grandsphere with the 800 Volt technology of the Audi E-Tron GT. It can charge at a speed of 270 kW.
