The threatened increase in petrol and diesel prices as of January 1, 2024 has been axed. A majority of the House of Representatives voted in favor of the VVD motion to oppose the planned increase in excise duties.
Because the government threatened to withdraw the discount on fuel excise duties as of January 1, 2024, diesel and gasoline would become much more expensive. Applying indexation (inflation correction) would increase prices even further. Gasoline would increase in price by about 21 cents per liter. A price increase of 13.5 cents per liter was threatened for diesel and about 9 cents for LPG.
That sounds like a significant increase, but when we did the calculations, it turned out that it was actually not too bad for the average motorist. Anyone who drives many more kilometers per year than Jan Automodaal, on the other hand, could save hundreds of euros per year in cost increases. The category of frequent drivers in particular will therefore breathe a sigh of relief. At least until 2025. Because the excise tax discount will now be extended for a year. It is not that it remains in force permanently.

The fact that the excise tax increase has now been scrapped does not mean that all proposals to make driving more expensive will not go ahead. For example, there is still a threat of a significant increase in road tax for LPG drivers and camper owners. Owners of classic cars, in turn, look forward to the possible reduction of the classic car scheme with fear and trembling.
