It doesn't end: Volkswagen continues to struggle with EVs -

Things haven't been going well for Volkswagen lately. It has now become known that the Volkswagen Group wants to cut thousands of jobs at its Cariad software division. That is annoying for the employees concerned, but also for those who are waiting for the new electric Porsche Macan and Audi Q6 E-tron.

The Porsche Macan EV and the Audi Q6 E-tron are on the Volkswagen Group's new modular EV platform PPE (Premium Platform Electric). The software comes from Cariad, the Volkswagen subsidiary founded in 2019. This division has been facing problems for some time. Deadlines are not met and budgets are exceeded. And so Volkswagen sweeps through. Again...

According to Volkswagen management has approved a restructuring plan that will see 2,000 employees lose their jobs over the next two years. The production of the Porsche Macan EV (photo left) and the Audi Q6 E-tron will therefore be delayed by 16 to 18 weeks. The new software used for this comes from Cariad.

Volkswagen prefers to play it safe

It is not the first time that the market introduction of the Porsche Macan EV has been delayed because the software is not yet ready. And the Audi Q6 E-tron should also have already been available, or at least almost. But Volkswagen would rather play it safe than have to go through hell like the first batch Volkswagen ID.3 models. Many owners were going crazy with all the software issues plaguing their EV.

The Volkswagen Group's promising SSP platform (Scalable Systems Platform) has also been postponed. This is cheaper to make and should replace the current MEB platform (from, among others, the Skoda Enyaq and the Audi Q4 E-tron) will be replaced in due course.

Hope in anxious days

There is a glimmer of hope for employees whose jobs are at risk: the unions still have to officially approve the restructuring plan. But for their colleagues in the factories where Volkswagen's EVs come off the production line, that also offered no solution:
