The Peugeot 308 is now also available as a fully electric station wagon. This Peugeot e-308 SW is not the most spacious, but it does have the largest luggage compartment of all electric station wagons currently for sale. Although that is less impressive than it seems.
An electric station wagon as such is already special. Unlike electric SUVs, you can count electric station wagons on the fingers of one hand. Literally, because apart from the Peugeot e-308 SW pictured here, you only have the MG 5 Electricof Nio ET5 Touring, Opel Astra Sports Tourer Electric in Porsche Taycan Sport (Cross) Turismo.
The electric motor of the Peugeot e-308 SW is a well-known one. You will also find it in the updated Peugeot e-208 and the Jeep Avenger, which, like the e-308, are children of the enormous Stellantis family. The engine has a power of 156 hp and a maximum torque of 270 Nm. The battery has a net capacity of 51 kWh (gross: 54 kWh).

Peugeot states a consumption of 15.1 kWh/100 km for the e-308 SW. A good figure, which we were able to achieve within a hair's breadth after a test drive. Afterwards, the on-board computer showed a very decent 15.2 kWh. This brings the specified range of 409 kilometers into view.
We must say that the driving conditions were almost ideal: not a breath of wind, about 19 degrees and here and there a maximum speed of 50 or even 30 km/h. But the route also took us through hills, where we drove a lot faster and placed more demands on the electric motor.
Despite its high weight of 1691 kg, the Peugeot e-308 SW feels sporty. Occasionally you notice that the car is carrying a heavy battery, such as in quickly taken roundabouts, but the e-308 does not easily slip over the front wheels. EVs are often accused of not offering any experience apart from their lightning-fast acceleration, but the Peugeot e-308 is the exception that proves the rule. The lower seating position that a station wagon has compared to an SUV plays a role in this.
Furthermore, the noticeably small steering wheel makes you feel like you are in a racing game; you will automatically sit and drive a little sportier. Do choose the sports mode. In Eco mode, the power is cut off and the energy is lost a bit.

The digital instruments are located above the steering wheel, and not behind it as usual. Peugeot calls this setup i-Cockpit. While some people applaud the compact steering wheel and the higher-placed instruments, others say they don't like it at all because part of the instruments is hidden behind the steering wheel rim. Just take a test drive.
The Peugeot e-308 SW is not the most spacious station wagon in its class. Leg and knee room is tight in the back seat. And because of the electric drivetrain, you lose luggage space compared to the petrol versions. They have 608 to 1634 liters on offer, the electric 308 SW offers 548 to 1574 liters. But that is still more than the 479-1367 liters of the MG 5. In fact, of all the electric station wagons mentioned, the e-308 SW has the largest luggage space.
What the e-308 SW does not have is a towing weight. The MG 5 may have 500 kg behind the towbar. That's not much, but at least something. The Nio ET5 Touring can even tow 1400 kg, but is larger and very expensive.
The prices of the Peugeot e-308 SW start at 44,885 euros. That is an additional cost of 7,285 euros compared to the petrol version 1.2 Puretech 130. In both cases it concerns the Allure version, but in the e-308 you get heated front seats and a heated steering wheel as an extra.
A three-phase 11 kW on-board charger and a heat pump are standard, items that the electric Opel Astra also has. The MG 5 does not have a heat pump as standard. You can also give the e-308 a beautiful metal color at no extra cost. At Opel and MG you have to pay for this.
I'm not a fan of SUVs. I like the fact that there is now an electric station wagon from a well-known European brand. A station often drives better than a high SUV. Moreover, the e-308 SW is a beautiful station wagon. I also like that the interior is not completely minimalist. I like buttons and keys because they often work better than a touch screen.
Admittedly, the space could be better. Things are especially cramped in the back seat. And the fact that a practical station wagon has no towing capacity is like not being able to order fries at a hamburger restaurant.
