Sales figures May 2021: this is the Volvo model that the Dutch buy en masse

New cars are being sold again. The showrooms of car companies are completely open, economic confidence is increasing and people are heading out again. Bovag and the RAI Association expect 400,000 Dutch people to get into a new car this year. Last year the counter was stuck at 356,000 cars. Provided the global chip shortages don't throw a spanner in the works...

Most popular models of May 2021

The Volvo XC40 is the most popular model of the month with 940 registrations. In other words, out of every 27 cars sold, one was a Volvo XC40.

The best-selling electric car of May 2021 is the Skoda Enyaq iV. We wrote a positive review of the Skoda Enyaq iV, after which 847 Dutch people decided to cut the buy or lease button.

The Toyota Yaris is in third place with 706 registered units. But the Dutch do not only buy and privately lease new Toyota models, the Aygo remains popular with 531 copies.

Most popular car brands of May 2021

If we look at the five car brands that registered the most cars in May, Volvo is missing from that list. Apparently the Swedes sell a lot of XC40s, but there is little demand for the other models.

1. Kia (2,262 cars and 8.8 percent market share)
2. Skoda (2,176 cars and 8.5 percent)
3. Volkswagen (2,155 cars and 8.4 percent)
4. Toyota (1,860 cars and 7.3 percent)
5. Peugeot (1,632 cars and 6.4 percent)

Kia's success is due to the Niro and the Picanto (4^fromin 5^from on the list of best-selling models). In addition to Enyaq iVs, Skoda has also sold Karoqs and Octavias. Volkswagen is still doing well with the current Polo. A bit strange, because the facelifted Polo has already been unveiled. The Toyota dealers therefore mainly supply Yaris and Aygo's and at Peugeot it is the 208 and 2008 that are in high demand. Although there are very fine electric versions of this, the majority of buyers opt for a petrol engine.
