Test: does the Opel Mokka live up to its smooth looks?


For years, the Opel customer was able to choose from many desirable sporty models. You had the Opel GT, the Manta and the Commodore, later followed by the Calibra, the Monza and the Speedster. And then there were also sporty versions of the popular family models, stickered and spoilered as GT/E, GSi or OPC. That time is long gone. If you now want a sporty Opel, you can choose from the Mokka GS Line, for example, with 18-inch light metal, black headliner, a Sport driving program, a roof plate sprayed in a different paint color and seat upholstery in a sporty design. Wow!


The fastest Mokka is the electric Mokka-e. It accelerates to 100 km/h in 9.0 seconds. If you want a Mokka with a petrol engine, 130 hp is the max. We tested the Mokka 1.0 Turbo GS Line with 100 hp. It certainly looks nice and sporty, but it has to come from a good family to be able to fulfill its sporting promises. In the comparative test that you can read in its entirety in Auto Review 8, the Mokka is immediately at a disadvantage, as the four other compact SUVs we have put on the rack - the Hyundai Kona, the Mazda CX-3, the Nissan Juke and the Volkswagen T-Cross - all have more power.




Opel Mokka 1.0 Turbo: high torque, low consumption

However, the Opel Mokka 1.0 Turbo with 100 hp has a trump card: with a maximum torque of 205 Nm, its engine does deliver a lot of pulling power. And that is already available at 1750 rpm. As a result, the Mokka gets off to a smooth start, is faster in the sprint than the Hyundai and the Nissan and shares the silver with the Volkswagen T-Cross. However, the Mokka cannot make a fist against the Mazda CX-3. Mazda supplies a four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine with a displacement of two liters in its smallest SUV. However, the performance of the Opel is given extra shine by its low fuel consumption: during the test we recorded an average of only 6.5 l/100 km (1 in 15.4).


Safety first: the Mokka has a diligent ESP and powerful brakes

Speed ​​is there, in the 100 hp Opel Mokka 1.0 Turbo. But can the car also maintain that speed when the road gets a bit more winding? The answer to that is… no. Due to its pleasantly direct steering, you get the impression that the car has great dynamic talents, but unfortunately its ESP is of the extremely cautious kind. At the slightest approach to a sporty driving style, the electronic guardian angel pulls the reins. And so the Mokka driver sees every other SUV pass by. In order not to let the backlog get too high, you do have a set of very powerful brakes. With an emergency stop from 100 km/h, the Mokka only needs 33.6 meters to come to a complete stop. A sports car feat.


Surprise: the old-timer Mazda CX-3 puts the competition behind

We didn't expect that either: the veteran Mazda CX-3 (to be honest, we had already forgotten the car a bit ...) gives the younger SUV guard a lesson 'this is how you combine pleasant suspension comfort with sporty driving characteristics'. Aided in part by its powerful Skyactiv-G engine, the CX-3 keeps up the pace. He bends around the pylons on the slalom like an Olympic ski champion, and on the timed lap of our test track (along with the Nissan) he takes a lead over his competitors from Germany and South Korea.


Conclusion: an SUV will never become a sports car

These are not Porsches or Maseratis. Compact SUVs such as the Hyundai Kona, the Mazda CX-3, the Nissan Juke, the Opel Mokka and the Volkswagen T-Cross are designed as family cars. Even if you opt for a sporty version such as the Opel Mokka GS Line, safety is still a priority. This does not mean, however, that there is no longer any driving pleasure to be had. The Mokka steers nice and sharp. But the EPS is lurking...
