The sweet Honda E came, saw and disappeared. For attempt number two, Honda takes a more serious approach: the Honda e:Ny1 is a compact electric SUV with a 412 kilometer range. But this Honda is certainly not a fast-charging miracle either...
With many new cars you can tell from the sales price what kind of meat you have in the cockpit. But with the Honda e:Ny1 you are going wrong. Because contrary to what the base price of 48,750 euros suggests, this is not a direct competitor for the Volkswagen ID.4, Nissan Ariya or Toyota bZ4X.
Instead, think a bit smaller. With a length of 4.39 meters, we are dealing with a valuable counterpart of the new Hyundai Kona Electric and the facelifted Peugeot E-2008. The so-called B segment.
Not yet ready for the switch to electric driving?
With Private Lease you can get into the iconic Fiat 500 Hybrid from just €279 per month.
Honda has developed a completely new EV platform and the e:Ny1 will be the first. The drive is via the front wheels and all electrical technology is located under the hood. Thanks to the large wheelbase and the placement of the battery pack low in the floor, the interior space is quite large.
In SUVs in the B-segment, the leg and headroom for passengers in the back seat is often insufficient, but in the second row of seats of the e:Ny1, adults also have enough freedom of movement.
Wherever you take a seat, in the e:Ny1 you always sit on artificial leather upholstery. Honda did not choose fake leather to save money, but to satiate mother earth. The tiny holes in the upholstery should prevent it from becoming a sweaty affair. And that works: even after hours of driving under the scorching sun, we and the artificial leather remain dry.
Of course the air conditioning helps with that. You can also let the cool air flow diffusely from the ventilation grilles - then the air conditioning will not blow so viciously against your body, which is nice. The synthetic-feeling steering wheel covering is less pleasant. The lack of real leather is a loss here.
The panoramic glass roof of the most expensive version has a special coating that reflects 90 percent of the sun's infrared radiation, preventing the interior from heating up. That works well.
The trunk is on the small side. With a capacity of 361 liters, it has to lose out to that of the Peugeot E-2008 (434 litres) and the Hyundai Kona Electric (466 litres). The electric tailgate is reserved for the most expensive version, just like the aforementioned panoramic roof. This 52,820 euro Advance version also has a premium audio system from Pioneer, heated steering wheel and smart parking assistance.
Whichever version you choose, the dashboard is always dominated by a huge 15.1-inch touchscreen that is placed vertically. Unlike Tesla or Ford, the screen is divided into three. At the bottom you will find the climate control, the middle part is reserved for radio and charging functions and at the top the navigation system and other applications run.
So even though the entire display is very large, each function has a fairly normal screen. In addition, you have to search less, because you quickly learn at what height you should hold your index finger to adjust the temperature or select another radio station. Although we remain of the opinion that nothing beats physical push buttons and dials in terms of ease of use while driving.
On the other hand, you don't need all your brain cells to control the e:Ny1. The handling is balanced and predictable and the suspension responds smoothly to bumps. The rather indirect steering has the positive feature that it is quite precise around the middle position. And we're happy that the steering wheel does have conventional buttons. This way, everyone can use the adaptive cruise control.
The accelerator pedal understands exactly what your intention is in every situation. When you press it gently, it responds sensitively, which helps during careful maneuvering in tight parking garages. On the other hand, if you pedal a little harder, you feel the full power of the electric motor.
With 204 hp and 310 Nm, it is strong enough to send the not-too-heavy electric SUV to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds. At 160 km/h the cake is gone. The fixed ratio gearbox does not allow more and the range is not a fan of it either.

With a capacity of 68.8 kWh, the e:Ny1 appears to have a fairly large battery pack. But Honda works with large margins to extend the life of the battery, so you have a net disposal of 62.0 kWh.
And you do need that, because both Honda's own consumption figure and our experiences indicate that energy consumption is not very favorable. The brochure mentions a range of 412 kilometers, but if, like us, you drive 19.6 kWh/100 km, 319 kilometers is a more realistic figure. If you drive in sports mode every day, you have to charge even more often...
At Fastned or Shell Recharge you quickly discover that the Honda e: Ny1 is not a fast charging miracle. With a charging capacity of 78 kW, it takes 45 minutes to go from 10 to 80 percent. We don't have the patience for that, because drinking a cup of coffee and recording a TikTok dance takes us 20 minutes at most.
And with a Hyundai Ioniq 5 or Kia EV6 under your back, that is also enough, but as mentioned, the Honda e:Ny1 does not fall into that segment. In terms of price, but not in terms of dimensions and performance.
And that is his salvation. Because waiting 45 minutes at the fast charger may be miserable, but the new Hyundai Kona Electric takes just as much 40 minutes. The fact that you are done with a Peugeot E-2008 after 30 minutes is due to a higher peak charging capacity (100 kW) and a smaller battery (51 kWh).
