With the Honda Civic Type R and the Ford Focus ST you can have endless fun, without any form of electric power. Enjoy it while you still can. But which combustion engine do you enjoy the most?
Although the range of hot hatchbacks with five peppers behind their names has thinned out considerably in recent years, that does not mean that the fastest Honda Civic is the only privateer on the coast. Ford delivers the Focus ST with the new Track Pack. This package is the sportiest Ford Focus equipped with shock absorbers that can be mechanically adjusted in hardness using special tools. Technology from rally and racing sports. A control button is missing: you have to crawl under the car - or pay a visit to the Ford dealer's workshop.
Anyone who thinks that the Honda runs laps around the Ford thanks to its higher power (329 versus 280 hp) will be disappointed. On the test track, the Honda Civic Type R is only 0.2 seconds faster on the clocked lap. This underlines the dynamic qualities of the Track Pack on the Ford Focus ST.

The Pirellis under the Ford Focus ST maintain grip for a long time in dry conditions and work excellently with the adjustable shock absorbers. To clarify: both the input and output stroke can be adjusted with the special tool. The steering of the Ford Focus ST offers a lot of feedback and provides less back pressure than that of the Honda. You have to teach yourself to accelerate early in the bend so that the differential lock is activated. Once you master this trick, you will reach cornering speeds you never thought possible.

But in this part of the test we focus on the engine. And then the Honda Civic Type R reigns supreme. The six-speed gearbox shifts with even more feeling, the engine builds more power high in the revs and the four-cylinder of the Honda Civic Type R also makes a more civilized impression. The engine's fiery character is even better expressed thanks to the throttle function: when you press the clutch and release the gas to change gears, the engine itself ensures that the revs do not drop too far.
Whether the top speed of 275 km/h is really necessary in the Honda, you have to decide for yourself. In the Focus, an electronic speed limiter is activated at 250 km/h. A good moment as far as we are concerned.
Is the formidable engine of Honda enough for the Civic Type R to win the entire test?
