TEST - renewed Citroën ë-C4 (2023) breaks through psychological barrier - AutoReview.nl

When colleague Bart tested the Citroën ë-C4 about a year and a half ago, he grumbled about the disappointing range. And voilà: now Citroën's electric crossover coupe is available with a larger battery pack and more power.

It was actually quite strange that the Stellantis group provided all its electric models with the same 50 kWh battery pack (45 kWh net). The Citroën ë-C4, Opel Mokka-e in Peugeot e-2008 are clearly higher and heavier than the electric versions of the Opel Corsa and the Peugeot 208.

Tip

Not yet ready for the switch to electric driving?

With Private Lease you can get into the iconic Fiat 500 Hybrid from just €279 per month.

In practice, this resulted in a smaller range for the larger models. While the Citroën ë-C4 is ideal for longer distances because of its space and comfort. That is why the new powertrain with the larger battery pack (54 kWh gross, 51 kWh net) is more than welcome. The WLTP range will therefore increase from 350 to 420 kilometers.

Greater range Citroën ë-C4

An extra range of 70 kilometers may not sound terribly impressive. But if you consider that a range of 400 kilometers is a psychological limit for many drivers, the ë-C4 takes an important step. The battery pack has also been changed chemically, with the cobalt content dropping from 20 to 10 percent. In addition to more range, the new electric powertrain also provides higher power; that increases from 136 to 156 hp.

Citroën has not yet stated what consequences the increase in power will have for performance. During our test drive, the ë-C4 took off quickly from a standstill and during intermediate sprints. In fact, if you come out of a C4 PureTech 100, you don't know what will happen to you when you give plank power.

New ë-C4 more economical

Despite the extra power, the ë-C4's powertrain has also become more efficient. Citroën promises an average power consumption of 14.9 kWh/100 km, compared to 15.3 kWh/100 km for the version with the small battery pack. In urban environments, even 12.0 kWh/100 km should be achievable with the new ë-C4. And believe it or not, we actually succeeded during the ride in the rural area of Paris.

On the highway it's a different story, where you quickly reach 20 kWh/100 km. The ë-C4 does fast charging with a maximum of 100 kW. At the fast charging station you do not have to follow the Porsches and Teslas at the 350 kW pole. Take into account half an hour of 'fast charging time' to charge the battery pack from 10 to 80 percent.

C4 more spacious than Mokka and 2008

Technically the Citroën C4 is equivalent to the Opel Mokka and the Peugeot 2008. Yet most Dutch car buyers prefer the other two Stellantis models. In 2023, only about 2000 units will have been sold in the Netherlands. The Peugeot 2008 achieved more than double the sales figure and the Opel Mokka is between the two French.

The cause probably lies in the taste-sensitive design of the Citroën. Because with practical aspects such as space on the back seat and in the trunk, it is the boss of the other two. Moreover, the C4 is the most comfortable of the three under Dutch conditions. In addition, it is nice that you operate the climate control with - quite nice - physical buttons and do not first have to dive into the infotainment screen, as with the Peugeot.

Price Citroën ë-C4

With its starting price of 39,830 euros, the Citroën ë-C4 54 kWh sits between its two cousins. The Opel is more than 1,800 euros cheaper and is at the same price level as the ë-C4 with the small battery pack, which will also remain available. The electric Peugeot 2008 54 kWh is about 1600 euros more expensive than its compatriot. Then we recently also have the Jeep Avenger, which is for sale from 39,500 euros.

Heat pump standard

All electric C4s have an 11 kW three-phase charger as standard, as well as a heat pump. In the Netherlands, the large battery pack is accompanied by at least the Plus equipment. You sit on extra well-padded comfort seats, you have a reversing camera and you can use TomTom's navigation service for a year. Automatic climate control, lane keeping assistance, cruise control, traffic sign recognition and LED headlights are also part of the standard package.

Do you still find the Citroën ë-C4 too ordinary? Then save an extra 850 euros and order one Citroën ë-C4 X. That is a raised sedan with a strange chicken butt, where a letterbox provides access to a 510 liter trunk space.
