The Audi Skysphere is "a vision of tomorrow's luxury segment", according to the press release. But it is a vision that will never become reality. Because we don't see the Transformer element of the Skysphere so one-two-three on a production car. The futuristic concept car can shy away from itself. An advanced system makes it possible to increase the wheelbase of the car (and thus the length) by 25 centimeters.
In its Sport mode, the Audi Skysphere is 4.94 meters long. The driver then drives the large coupé himself. If he or she switches to Grand Touring mode, the wheelbase is extended by 25 centimeters and the total length comes to 5.19 meters. At the same time, the pedals and steering wheel disappear. In the Grand Touring mode, the Skysphere Level 4 is autonomous, Audi proposes. During the journey, the roof can be opened, so that passengers can enjoy the open air.
According to Audi, the Skysphere's design was inspired by a 1930s roadster, the Horch 853. The Skysphere is 2.0 meters wide, only 1.2 meters high and has a long 'bonnet', which includes the electrical components of the powertrain houses. It consists of one electric motor on the rear axle, which produces 620 hp and 750 Nm. This allows the 1800 kilo Skysphere to sprint to 100 km/h in 4.0 seconds. Thanks to an 80 kWh battery, the EV has a range of 500 kilometers.
The Audi Skysphere has a steer-by-wire steering system with variable transmission and rear-wheel steering, adaptive air suspension and an active suspension that controls each wheel individually. It is the first in a series of three study models, according to Audi. The Audi Grandsphere will follow this year. In 2022 we will see the Audi Urbansphere.
