Battery giant CATL has developed a new battery that could be used in your future EV. You can charge no less than 400 kilometers within 10 minutes - enough for a trip from the Netherlands to northern France.
The Chinese battery manufacturer - which, among other things, supplies battery packs to Tesla - presented the new battery called Shenxing at an online event. According to the company, approximately 400 kilometers of range can be recharged within 10 minutes, and the total range of the battery is 700 kilometers.
However, we should mention that this concerns the operating radius according to the Chinese CLTC measurement method. Count on approximately 100 kilometers less for the WLTP method used in Europe. But 600 kilometers is still a lot.

But what is the secret of the new battery? Shenxing is an LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery. This provides a number of major advantages. Due to the lack of cobalt or nickel, an LFP battery is cheaper to produce and the batteries also have a longer lifespan.
One of the big disadvantages of LFP batteries is that they do not function well in winter weather conditions: the battery drains faster and the charging is not smooth. However, these issues have been addressed, reports CATL. According to the Chinese, the battery can be charged from 0 to 80 percent within half an hour, even at temperatures down to -10 degrees.
The Shenxing battery has a new composition of materials, including a graphite anode. This makes the battery cheap to produce. CATL therefore expects Shenxing to become a real mass product. According to the Chinese, the battery is suitable for any type of vehicle. In addition, according to CATL, the Shenxing battery is the first battery worldwide to support 4C charging. We will spare you the technical explanation: it simply means that loading is lightning fast.
The potential success of the Shenxing battery could use CATL as the company faces a decline in battery demand. This is partly due to the growth of competitors BYDwhich is claiming an increasing market share.
The new battery is expected to be mass produced in its home country China towards the end of this year. The first electric cars equipped with Shenxing batteries will be launched in the first quarter of 2024.
