We try to think of a scenario in which this particular function of the Mercedes EQG could be useful, but we are unable to do so. It just looks cool, let's stick to that. The electric SUV can rotate exactly on its axis - just like a tank.
It may be of use to you in the wilderness of Australia or the United States, but in the cobbled Netherlands it is once fun to show it to your neighbors on a vacant lot: the G-Turn. It goes like this. The Mercedes EQG is powered by four electric motors. And if you rotate the left two forwards and the right two backwards, the plug-G will rotate on its axis to the left, as in the video below.
The American Rivian previously announced the option for its electric R1T and R1S, but for the time being that option is nowhere to be seen. Rivian has started production of its pickup, the R1T, but is unable to meet demand, partly due to manufacturing problems. So the Mercedes EQG is probably the first to hit the market with a tank-like turning function. A warning in advance: do not try the G-Turn on asphalt, because then you will lose the profile of your tires.
EVs are like gadgets in that respect. If they can do something crazy, the tech aficionados line up for it. Take the GMC Hummer, which carries the dubious title of 'heaviest car on the market'. It can turn its four wheels individually for a 'crabwalk': driving diagonally forwards or backwards while the carriage remains straight. What is the practical use? No idea. You can brag about it in the pub?
