The most popular EV in Japan is not a Tesla, but this sweet cart -

Tesla is undoubtedly the most popular car brand worldwide when it comes to electric cars. In Japan the situation is very different: all EVs are trumped by this sweet 'kei car'.

According to figures from Bloomberg the Nissan Sakura is Japan's most popular EV. The reason you've probably never heard of this EV Nissan is because the so-called 'kei-car' is only intended for the Japanese market. Such small carts are extremely popular there - logically especially in the city. With a 'kei-car' you often benefit from tax benefits and lower insurance costs.

Not yet ready for the switch to electric driving?

With Private Lease you can get into the iconic Fiat 500 Hybrid from just €279 per month.

EV for 12,500 euros

The Nissan Sakura has sold no less than 35,099 times in 2023 so far. This means that the mini SUV accounts for about half of all EV sales in the country. This is partly due to the attractive price: after deducting government subsidies, the Sakura can be ordered for just under 12,500 euros. That's almost three times cheaper than one Tesla. In Japan you can get into one from 33,000 euros Tesla Model 3.

What exactly is the Nissan Sakura?

The 3.35 meter long 'kei car' was named car of the year in Japan last year. The Sakura has a modest power of 64 hp and 195 Nm of torque. The already not so large 20 kWh battery is extra compact due to a special composition of the cells. The range is 180 kilometers.

The small EV can reach a speed of up to 130 kilometers per hour, but is mainly suitable for city use. This is emphasized by the minuscule turning circle of 4.8 meters. Parking is super easy, but to be on the safe side, the Sakura is equipped with a parking assistance system. Mitsubishi by the way, has its own version, the Mitsubishi eK

On the inside, the Nissan seems to be equipped with all modern conveniences. The kei car has a 7-inch digital instrumentation and a 9-inch touchscreen to which your phone can be connected with Apple CarPlay. You also get LED lighting, alloy wheels and climate control as standard.
