Since 2018 there is a new Mercedes G-class, which looks exactly like the old one. Mercedes did some crazy things with the previous generation. Who can forget the Mercedes-AMG G 63 6x6, the Mercedes-Maybach G 650 Landaulet, or the Mercedes G 500 4x4? All variants of the G-class that are extra high on their wheels and therefore tower above the rest of the traffic.
The new Mercedes G 500 4x4 will be unveiled later this year. It has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with more than 400 horsepower, which drives the huge wheels via portal axles. Those are drive shafts that are not positioned in the middle of the wheels, but at the top. The drive is via a gear system. The purpose of portal axles is to increase ground clearance.
The previous-generation Mercedes G 500 4x4 - which was introduced in a striking highlighter yellow color - had an imposing 45 centimeters ground clearance and a meter ford depth (not that a G 500 4x4 owner is ever going to try that...). For comparison: a Jeep Wrangler in Rubicon version does not go further than 27 centimeters and 76 centimeters, respectively.
