The day you knew would come: BMW has stopped producing combustion engines in Munich. You could call it the end of an era. Yet BMW remains skeptical about a fully electric future for the brand.
The fact that the BMW factory in Munich no longer produces combustion engines may be a slap in the face for car enthusiasts. Bavarian Motor Works, but still no reason to jump off a bridge. BMW continues to build engines that run on petrol or diesel at its factories in England (Hams Hall) and Austria (Steyer). Only the main factory in Munich is shutting down.

According to the German news platform br.de is the last combustion engine to leave the BMW factory in Munich, a V8. That happened on November 10. You can still find a V8 in the BMW 8 seriesof BMW X5 and the BMW X6. A worthy farewell for the factory. It's hard to imagine that after 60 years of production the last engine is a three-cylinder engine BMW 1 series. But BMW must have figured it out that way. A V12 would have been even more fun, but BMW would have stopped doing that in 2022.
The 1,200 factory employees who ensured that you and we could experience what makes BMW driving so great don't have to turn to a benefits agency. They are retrained and given different positions within BMW.
BMW has not yet said when it will finally stop producing petrol and diesel engines. Volvo has already announced that it will be fully electric by 2030, but BMW is still skeptical about an all-electric future, especially outside Europe. BMW will therefore continue to build combustion engines for a while, but no longer in its native country.
