This compact car, once so popular in the Netherlands, is back -

The Mitsubishi Colt is back in the Netherlands. It is based on the Renault Clio and therefore looks exactly like it. Yet you have a good reason to choose the Mitsubishi Colt.

The Dutch love security and guarantees. We are just shy of taking out insurance in case a shooting star lands on your head. In this regard, it is better to take the new Mitsubishi Colt than the Renault Clio. Mitsubishi is generous and gives an eight-year warranty, Renault does not go beyond an economical two years. That guarantee could well become a strong asset in the battle for the buyer's favor.

But it remains to be seen whether the Mitsubishi Colt will be able to match the success of its predecessors. There is no doubt about that previous success, in the 1980s almost as many Coltjes were put on the road every year as, for example, Polootjes.

Under the skin there is another important difference with the Renault Clio. The entry-level model of the new Mitsubishi Colt is the three-cylinder 1.0L MPI with 67 hp. You will not find that naturally aspirated drivetrain in the Clio on the Dutch market.

You will find more driving tests in our weekly newsletter:

Mitsubishi Colt Hybrid

However, we are on our way with the Mitsubishi Colt Hybrid. The powertrain consists of a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine, an electric motor, a starter generator, a 1.2 kWh battery and a clutchless automatic transmission. That transmission has two electric gears and four 'normal' gears. It makes you dizzy just writing it down, let alone while driving. Because things don't really work smoothly. Especially at low speeds, for example in busy city traffic, the various components seem to be busy discussing who does what.

Well insured on the road

Choose the coverage that suits your (electric) car with Interpolis Car Insurance. Standard €0 deductible and free choice of repairs.

At other times, exactly the engine that you don't expect comes into play. During our test, starting is done 'normally' with the petrol engine, while driving up the hill of a parking garage is done electrically. Sometimes the petrol engine starts abruptly when you are constantly driving at 50 km/h and there seems to be no reason for it.

You get used to it, but it's not all that refined. On the highway, where the petrol engine is always active, you are less bothered by the confusion between all parts. The theoretical consumption of this knitting pattern with a few stitches too many is 4.3 l/100 km (1 in 23.3), and if you are not tempted to test the top speed, in practice you should easily fall below 1 can stay at 20.

Mitsubishi Colt test conclusion

The Renault Clio is a reliable, good-driving car and therefore an excellent basis for Japanese variations on a French theme. There are no technical differences, except for the 1.0 base engine. Those who are unsure between Clio and Colt can make their choice based on the tastiest coffee, or the salesperson with the most neatly polished shoes. Or on the basis of Mitsubishi's much better warranty conditions, because that is a serious advantage compared to Renault.
