After the arrival of the front-wheel drive 1-series in 2019, many enthusiasts saw the future of the BMW 2-series Coupé bleak. After all, it was obvious that this sporty model variant, just like the 1-series, the 2-series Tourer and the 2-series Gran Coupé, would also send its horsepower via the front wheels to the road surface. But nothing is less true!
BMW has chosen to put the new 2 Series Coupé on a modified version of the 4 Series platform. This means that, just like the BMW 4-series, it has 'normal' rear-wheel drive and a longitudinally mounted engine. We can live with the fact that the 2-series does not inherit the huge open nostrils of the 4-series. Don't think that the 2-series Coupé has the face of a wallflower. The top version certainly impresses with a remarkably thick bumper, with huge, triangular air intakes at the corners.
Although no sheet metal part has remained the same, the new BMW 2-series Coupé is still very recognizable. We especially appreciate the relatively long hood and the 2 cm lowered roofline. As a result, the classic coupé design stands even straighter than before.

The new 2-series Coupé looks quite compact. That's an illusion, because with a length of 4.54 meters it is 11 centimeters longer than its predecessor. It is also almost 25 cm longer than the 1 series. The coupé has grown 6 centimeters in width (1.84 m). The distance between the front and rear axles has increased by 5.1 cm - good news for rear passengers. The rear lights do not participate in the growth spurts of the body: they are even clearly shrunk.
Fans can also breathe a sigh of relief about the engine technology: the 2-series Coupé will also remain available with a six-cylinder in-line engine and there will be no three-cylinder. Four-cylinder engines, however, are inevitable. Under the hood of the entry-level model of the series, the 220i, is a brand-new example, with an output of 184 hp and a torque of 300 Nm. This sprints the newcomer to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds.
In a year, the 230i Coupé will be available, which has a 245 hp version of the new engine under the hood. A bit against expectations, BMW also includes a diesel version of the 2-series Coupé in the delivery program. This 220d Coupé is equipped with mild hybrid technology and produces 190 hp and 400 Nm. In the hundred sprint (6.9 s), the diesel beats its most modest petrol brother by more than half a second. Both the petrol and diesel variants have an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission on board.
Thanks in part to a greatly increased torsional rigidity, considerably increased track widths and an ideal weight distribution (50:50), the compact coupé promises pleasant handling. The temporary highlight of the series is the M240i xDrive (purple car in the photos). It has the same fine six-in-line as the BMW M340i, with 374 hp and 500 Nm. This launches the glitzy coupé to 100 km/h in 4.3 counts. If desired literally, because the sports version of the Steptronic automatic transmission is equipped with launch control. Inside, the 2 Series Coupé is a true BMW, with clean lines and a driver-focused dashboard. BMW does not participate in the fashion of the flattened handlebars. Even the M240i xDrive just has a completely round one.
What BMW does go along with in all of our interests is the safety race; you can hardly think of an electronic assistant, unless it is available. Whether or not at extra cost. Speaking of prices: BMW has already announced that too. You can even order the new 2-series Coupé!
After ordering you still have to wait for your beautiful car. The first customers will not be able to receive their new BMW 2-series Coupé until early 2022. But yes, he comes a long way. Like the BMW 3 Series, the new 2 Series Coupé is built in Mexico.
