This is the catch to Toyota's ambitious EV plans -

Toyota previously announced that solid-state batteries with a range of approximately 1,000 kilometers will not be long in coming. Anyone who is extremely enthusiastic about this should temper their expectations, because there is a catch...

Toyota can supply the battery to a very limited extent from 2027. According to a report from Automotive News, which is based on information from Toyota itself, there is just enough material available for several thousand solid-state batteries worldwide in the first period of production. The battery will go into mass production from 2030, but even then it will only be enough for approximately 10,000 units per year.

The numbers mentioned are somewhat disappointing, especially given the grand announcements cooperation with the Japanese petroleum giant Idemitsu. This company has been developing solid-state batteries with sulfide since 2001 and will supply the materials to Toyota to enable production. As it now appears, the collaboration is only good for a limited initial production.

Drop in the bucket

According to Toyota's plans, the brand must collaborate with... Lexus account for approximately 3.5 million electric cars worldwide. With these numbers in mind, the 10,000 planned solid-state batteries seem like a drop in the ocean. There is a good chance that due to limited production, the long-awaited battery will only be used in the top models, which are not for everyone due to their higher price.

No worries

It means that the majority of the expected 3.5 million EVs will have batteries that we already know today. But don't worry: these will be greatly improved in the coming years (see the table above). Toyota's lithium-ion batteries will offer more than 800 kilometers of range from 2026 and a charging time of 20 minutes. One to two years later, a range of 1,000 kilometers and a charging time of 10 minutes are even possible.

Toyota also continues to invest in LFP batteries. From 2026 or 2027, these will have a range of more than 600 kilometers and a maximum charging time of 30 minutes. The batteries are cheaper to produce and will therefore probably find their way into lower-priced Toyota models.
