Trump-supporting car brands are suddenly in favor of President Biden's EV plans

Democratic President Joe Biden is going to have a so-called 'executive order', in which he sets a climate target for the car industry. By 2030, half of all new cars sold in the United States must be fully electric or plug-in hybrids. That may not sound very ambitious, but in a country where the Ford F-150 - a large pickup with V6 or V8 engine - has been the best-selling car for decades, it's a big step.

Donald Trump sued the state of California

Biden's predecessor - Donald Trump - did everything he could to overturn the Obama administration's strict environmental requirements. He has reversed more than 100 pieces of legislation in four years. These had to do with air pollution, toxins, animal protection, water pollution, oil drilling, and more. The Trump administration sued, among others, the state of California, which has had an exceptional position since the 1970s. The state is allowed to set its own emissions regulations and they have since been a lot stricter than in the rest of the United States.

Automakers backed Trump in battle

Automakers - including Fiat Chrysler (Stellantis), General Motors, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Toyota - supported Trump in his fight against California (BMW, Ford, Honda, Volkswagen and Volvo did not). As an official reason, the companies stated that they are against the state's exemption position and in favor of national emission requirements. But would the opportunity coalition also have supported Trump if he wanted to introduce stricter national requirements in the US than California? No doubt not.

Ford, GM and Stellantis applaud Joe Biden's plan

Anyway, General Motors and Stellantis have turned around like a leaf on a tree and are now enthusiastically applauding Biden's plan. Together with Ford, they have released a statement in which they express the ambition to sell between 40 and 50 percent electric vehicles by 2030. Toyota - which has supported Republican climate deniers and lobbies hard against the adoption of EVs - also says it is happy with Biden's plan: "You can count on Toyota. This plan is an environmental victory."
