It won't be GTX

With the Volkswagen ID.GTI Concept, the Wolfsburgers show that they are retracing their steps. The car is based on the previously announced Volkswagen ID.2all and will therefore simply get the GTI predicate on the buttocks and nose again. Another big difference with the ID.4 and ID.5 GTX is that it will be a front wheel drive and not a 4x4. That saves weight in any case, because the GTXs have a second electric motor above the rear axle. The front-wheel drive probably also provides more of the old-fashioned GTI feeling that the Volkswagen Polo GTI and Volkswagen Golf GTI deliver to you.

With a length of 4.10 meters, the ID.GTI is close to the current Polo (4.07 m) and let's hope that the weight of the electric GTI does not increase too much. Volkswagen itself claims: "Even with its efficient powertrain, low weight, good aerodynamics, large battery and perfect balance between sportiness and comfort, the ID. GTI Concept is ready for any (long) trip."

Price Volkswagen ID.GTI

What we have good hopes about, in any case, is the price of the ID.GTI. The entry-level model of the ID.2all will remain - if Volkswagen fulfills its promise - under 25,000 euros, and we cannot imagine that the GTI version will be more than 15,000 euros more expensive. That would mean that the ID.GTI falls below the price of the 207 hp Polo GTI (42,690 euros). Not to mention the Golf GTI (245 hp, 59,240 euros).

Volkswagen is not yet saying anything about the technical specifications of the ID.GTI. But count on clearly more than the 223 hp of the standard version of the ID.2all, which should be able to sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.9 seconds. We hope for 250 to 300 horsepower.

Honoring tradition

In terms of appearance, the ID.GTI strongly reminds us of older Golfjes GTI. Because of the recognizable C-pillar - with hidden door handle - for example, and of course the red GTI badges are not missing here and there. Modern LED lamps, illuminated VW logos and striking light metal complete the picture.

If you want to keep the GTI tradition alive, sports seats with diamond upholstery, a gear knob in the shape of a golf ball and a three-spoke sports steering wheel should of course not be missed. But what do you do with a gear knob if there is no gear lever? The transmission lever is always on the steering column. Good question; that's why the Volkswagen ID.GTI gets a golf ball in the center console for the GTI Experience Control, which controls the driving profiles, among other things.

Large luggage compartment

Besides a nice portion of nostalgia, the interior of the Volkswagen also offers other good news. For example, the slider haters will be happy with the illuminated buttons for the climate control under the large infotainment screen.

The Volkswagen ID.GTI is certainly not only intended for rip-offs and circuit tigers. Even the good house father and mother can handle it. For example, the flexible luggage compartment with additional storage box has a capacity of 490 liters (1,330 liters with the rear seats folded down). Under the rear seat is another lockable storage space with a volume of 50 liters. Handy for laptops and tablets.

We say: bring it on, and rather sooner than in 2026 or 2027 as is currently expected. And then let's hope that the price does indeed stay below 40 mille!
