Good summer tires perform excellently on dry and wet roads. But the differences can also be large between summer tires. This was also apparent from the summer tire test in the May issue of Auto Review. For example, the test car with the winning Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics stopped almost 9 meters earlier on a wet road surface from 100 km/h than the worst-performing tires on this section. Winter tires perform particularly well in frost, on ice and snow. But of course, you're not going to change tires every time the weather changes.
That's why Goodyear invented the all-season tire in 1977. At the time, they already offered a nice compromise between summer and winter tires, but now the techniques and materials used have become so much better that you can safely label all-season tires as the golden mean. Especially in a fickle climate like ours.
By choosing all season tires, you give yourself a bit of convenience. And - not unimportant - you can save on car costs. For example, you do not have to buy an extra set of winter wheels. Especially if you want to drive nicely in the winter on light-alloy wheels, that can save serious money. You also do not have to pay for a tire hotel that stores your summer or winter rubber in a responsible manner.
Also with their product properties, all-season tires can be beneficial for the wallet. In 2020, Goodyear was the first manufacturer to supply an all-season tire that combines optimal grip with the economical A label. To achieve this low rolling resistance, Goodyear used the very latest developments in tread patterns and new rubber compounds.
This new technology can make a big difference in consumption. For example, a car running on tires with a G label can be up to 8 percent less fuel efficient than a car on Goodyears Vector with the A label. That can be the difference between 1 in 14 and more than 1 in 13. Certainly at the current fuel prices, that is not a superfluous luxury.
Car manufacturers also benefit from the lowest possible consumption of their models, which is why Peugeot, Citroën, DS Automobiles and Fiat, for example, like to use Goodyear Vector tires for the first assembly in the factory.
