Read our article to learn what it costs to purchase and install a Wallbox/charging station at home. Including possible work on the meter cupboard.
What does a home charging station cost? That simple question has a tricky answer. Because there are all kinds of things involved and no situation is the same. That's why it's a bit like asking: what does a sun holiday cost? That depends on your requirements and wishes, such as the destination, the flight, the hotel, the drinks, and so on and so forth.
The price of a charging station for the home is the sum of four amounts: the price of the charging station itself, the costs of the installation, the possible additional costs of the network operator (more on this later) and the electricity price. We highlight them one by one below.
Wallboxes are getting cheaper and cheaper. You can get such a device at home from 499 euros. But then the charging station is on your kitchen table at home – a plastic box with a screen and a charging cable attached to it. Now someone has to install the wallbox for you…
You must hire an electrician to install the charging station or wallbox and connect the power cables in the meter cupboard. Every situation is different, so it is almost impossible to give an exact amount. Do you want the charging station on a pole or on the wall? How many meters are there between the wallbox and the meter box? Do cables need to be buried? Take into account roughly 400 to 800 euros for installing the charging station.
In older homes, the power connection of the house sometimes needs to be reinforced. Charging an electric car costs a lot of electricity and you don't want the washing machine to fail as soon as you plug in the car.
The rates for such an increase can be found on the website of your network operator. For example, Liander charges approximately 300 euros for a reinforcement, plus the costs of possible adjustments to your meter cupboard. Liander also emphasizes the importance of using a recognized installer.
Gasoline is charged per litre, electricity per kilowatt hour. That price is stated in the energy contract that you have concluded for your home. For example, 0.40 euros per kWh. So in a Skoda Enyaq iV with the large battery of 77 kWh, electricity costs 30.80 euros. The high electricity price is a possible reason why you shouldn't drive electric just yet.
If you're still in doubt about it lease or buy electric carthen it is smart to use the costs of electric driving vs. petrol and hybrid read through.
