To get consumers to buy electric cars, they must become cheaper and have more range. That is why, according to Toyota, it is not enough to focus on just one type of battery. But it is certain that it can be done much cheaper, according to CEO Takero Kato.
Initially, Toyota was not keen on fully electric cars, but... The Japanese car giant is now working hard on a major electric offensive. This is necessary if the brand wants to realize its ambition to sell 3.5 million fully electric models worldwide by 2030.

To achieve this, Toyota focuses on three core concepts: cost, performance and high-performance. With the last two, think mainly about range and charging speed. Performance batteries must have a WLTP range of more than 800 kilometers. Moreover, a fast charging time of 20 minutes (from 20 to 80 percent capacity) is the least.
The high-performance batteries should even provide a range of more than 1,000 kilometers in solid-state form. This is partly achieved because Toyota also wants to make the batteries lower. We can expect the first performance batteries from 2026, followed by the most extreme range guns within two years. In addition to lower weight and much better performance, Toyota expects that these batteries can be made up to 20 percent cheaper than the currently common types.
The biggest hit in terms of costs, on the other hand, is the lithium iron phosphate battery with a bipolar structure. This LFP battery will also make its Toyota debut in 2026 and should provide cost savings of no less than 40 percent, compared to the type of battery currently in use. Toyota bZ4X is. This would mean that the car as a whole could also become thousands of euros cheaper. After all, the battery pack is by far the most expensive part of an EV.
And cheap does not promise to be expensive, because in addition to being less expensive, this type of battery is also more efficient. For example, the range of the bZ4X with the new LFP battery would not be 411 to 512 kilometers, but about 600 kilometers. That difference could increase further in future Toyotas. Because the new type of battery will also be more compact, according to Toyota. This way you can reduce the height of a future Toyota without compromising interior space. And a lower bodywork is good for the streamline and therefore beneficial for efficiency.
