The arrival of the Ferrari 296 GTB is special. And a bit strange too. Because at first glance there seems to be no place for the 296 GTB in Ferrari's delivery program. After all, the Italian sports car brand already has the comparable F8 Tributo with 720 hp and the 1000 hp SF90 Stradale (also a plug-in hybrid).
The Ferrari 296 GTB is positioned with a shoehorn in between. Its 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 and electric motor deliver a total power of 830 hp and 730 Nm of torque, of which 663 hp is coughed up by the fuel engine. With this, the 296 GTB goes to 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, 7.3 seconds to 200 km/h and eventually reaches a top of over 330 km/h.
The battery pack of the Ferrari 296 GTB is only 7.45 kWh, so it goes without saying that you won't get far on electricity alone: a maximum of 25 kilometers. If you like, you can hit a top speed of 135 km/h in electric mode, but if you do, the battery will probably run out after a few miles.
It is striking that the 296 GTB is not four-wheel drive, like the SF90, but that it only transfers its combined power to the rear wheels. As standard, the new Ferrari is equipped with an eight-speed dual clutch transmission. An option is the Assetto Fiorano package, which gives the car a stiffer chassis, makes it lighter and generates more downforce.
It is not yet known how the 296 GTB will compare to the F8 Tributo in terms of price. It is more powerful than its stable mate, slightly smaller, and has lower CO2 emissions due to its plug-in hybrid technology. So that could mean it will end up below the F8 Tributo due to a lower BPM. But hey, if that happens, Ferrari will definitely raise the pre-tax price…
